Slane Wins MD Youth Entrepreneur Award Mt. Airy Messenger -- May 17, 2000 -- By Nan Brown
Tim Slane started mowing one of his Mt. Airy neighbor's lawn when he was 11. It wasn't long until he was acquiring more customers and made the decision to start his own business called Tim's Lawn Service. Over the course of the last six years, the business has grown and continues to thrive.
The services offered by Tim's Lawn Service include, in addition to mowing, landscape, mulching, trimming shrubbery, spring and fall cleanup (including leaf removal), planting, and snowplowing in the winter. He has 30 customers across the area for whom he works each week, with some as far away as Rockville.
Tim isn't even quite out of high school. He is 17 years old and will graduate from Linganore High School on June 6. He spends half of each school day attending the Frederick County Career and Technology Center. He took landscaping program there last year, and this year he is enrolled in the fire and rescue cadet program.
During the course of year he has completed various fire and rescue courses. He is now a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and is following in his dad's footsteps by serving as a volunteer for the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company and the Independent Hose Company.

He was nominated for the Maryland Youth Entrepreneur Award by Dr. Carroll Shry, his landscaping teacher at the Career and Technology Center. Slane indicated that in connection with the award nomination, "I had to write a 500 word essay on what business is about, what I do, and how much I make-providing various statistics and information." He also had to submit additional paperwork and photographs documenting the growth of his business.
Slane won second place and received his award at the 16th Annual Maryland Small Business Awards breakfast on May 4 at Martin's West in Baltimore. He won a $200 savings bond in recognition of his achievement.
After graduation, Slane plans to take a year off from school to work full time in his business in order to continue to build it. After that he plans to take business courses at Frederick Community College and landscaping courses at Montgomery College Germantown campus at night.
Tim's parents, Tim Sr. and Gail are also involved. His dad helps him with the mowing and landscaping work and his mom assists with bookkeeping and paperwork. Slane's friend, Bryan McIntee also works for the business part time.
Slane business includes an impressive array of equipment including three commercial walk behind mowers, a tractor, a push mower, three weed whackers, two blowers and two snowblowers. The most recent acquisitions for business have been a dump truck and ZTR riding mower.
Slane likes to keep his customers well informed by doing such things as sending them bulletins in the spring to update them on his business and what services he has added.
